British Heart Foundation & Coinstar Celebrate Milestones at Iconic Red Bench
In Living Memory of Nigel White, Heart Survival Storyteller.
British Heart Foundation celebrates its 65th anniversary this year with a launch of 65 commemorative red benches across the UK. These stand-out benches turn expectations up-side-down and rather than remembering those lost which is perhaps typical of many British benches, they celebrate survivors of cardiovascular conditions with an ‘In Living Memory’ plaque with an individual message about the survivor.
One such bench is installed at Brickfields Park in Bath. This ‘In Living Memory’ bench is in honour of Nigel White, a double heart attack survivor, whose life has been shaped by cardiovascular disease from a young age having lost his brother Kevin to heart disease at the age of just 9. Nigel’s plaque reads:
In living memory

Coinstar, who operates a self-service coin counting kiosk network in popular supermarkets up and down the UK, has supported British Heart Foundation for many years, and recently met at the bench to celebrate the partnership and hear Nigel’s story.
Sarah Chappell from Coinstar said “Coinstar is incredibly proud to work with British Heart Foundation enabling the charity to receive donations from more than 2,000 Coinstar locations across the UK. Hearing Nigel’s story is very humbling; he shared that it was a massive shock to have a heart attack and the experience made him lose confidence. During his recovery, Nigel noticed that most of the literature he received was from the British Heart Foundation which led him to become a volunteer at one of the BHF Charity Shops in Bath and a BHF Heart Survival Storyteller.
It really is fantastic to hear firsthand how British Heart Foundation supports people like Nigel who experience heart issues with their recovery, and Coinstar is extremely proud to help raise funds for this cause.”
Louise Gallard, fundraising manager for British Heart Foundation said “I am happy to announce that a fantastic total of £574,000 has been donated by Coinstar customers to British Heart Foundation. A milestone worth celebrating!
Every 3 minutes, someone in the UK dies from cardiovascular disease. It can affect anyone. Your support helps British Heart Foundation fund research that helps save lives. With your donations we want to power the next breakthroughs in diagnosing, treating, and preventing the world’s biggest killer. We are very grateful that Coinstar machines can make giving to BHF so easy.”
